.by Chaat House is really about our mother,
Asha, and her passion for Delhi cuisine. She
enjoyed cooking so much - and in turn people so enjoyed her dishes - that she
decided to open an Indian restaurant in London in the early '70's serving an
international clientele for over 30 years!
Not another curry house serving chicken tikka masala, we hear you say! No, not
really!
Our mother showed us - and her loyal clientele - a different side to Indian
cuisine. Something altogether lighter, fresher - where every mouthful produced
a different flavour! We're talking about street food, known as Chaat in
Hindi - the national language of India. Chaat
was created in Chandni Chowk, a collection of bustling alleyways in Old Delhi -
and the birthplace of our mother - so she knew what she was talking about!
Chaat is a tantalizing combination of ingredients - usually vegetarian, but not
always - made up of chickpeas, potatoes, secret spice blend, freshly made
yoghurt, tangy tamarind chutney and little crackers, known as puris, for
crunch! Carefully put together and you end up with a mouthwatering combination
quite unlike a stodgy chicken tikka but so authentic, its origins can be traced
back to 16 th century Mughal India. Use the ingredients separately, and you can
enjoy their versatility - pour the chutneys over chips, sprinkle the masala in
salads or over barbequed corn, use the crackers as canapé bases or salad
accessories - the limit is only your imagination!
We are Asha's daughters and we want to share her magical ingredients with you!
Asha means 'hope' in Hindi - We hope this website will help you learn more
about the fantastic regional cuisine of Old and New Delhi. We also hope that by
using our online shopping facility to try some of the products and ingredients,
you will get as much enjoyment from our mother's range as we have in bringing
them to life!
Enjoy!
